Description
A portfolio piece I’ve been working on for quite some time during rare spare hours.
The basic idea was contrasting a futuristic setting with something simple and timeless like fishing. I was hoping to make the gloomy and dystopian setting contrast with some brighter, more beautiful spots (tech vs. nature). I really liked the concept when I first came up with it and I’m so glad to have finally been able to give it the painting time it deserved. I really had fun adding all of the details to try and tell a story about what this fisherman’s life might be like and what it takes to get by in his world.

Five Minute Break
This is a portfolio piece that I’ve been doing on the side for a while now and I think it’s finally ready to post.
The core idea was to show some powerful piece of military machinery contrasting with a very serene and peaceful setting. The idea evolved into this moment where a mech pilot taking a quick break from her duties notices that the forest she has to patrol is actually quite beautiful.
I tried to loosen up the brush strokes to be just a touch more painterly than my usual style. A really fun technique that I hope to continue in the future.
This will be the cover image for the August 2015 issue of Perihelion Sci-fi magazine.

To Have Wings
Hi Everyone,
This is an illustration portfolio piece that I’ve been wanting to tackle for years. It’s really a second attempt at a concept I came up with back in 2007 ("Prison in the Sky"). I really liked the idea of a prison without walls, gravity being the only guard, but I thought my composition and rendering were pretty bad in my first attempt.
I think this new version is finally doing the concept some justice. I was very happy with the sense of scale and atmosphere and I’m pleased with how the gesture and rendering ended up.
